PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to provide an extensive hair braiding and dreadlock service. They will be able to ensure all preparations to the workstation and client are properly conducted. They will also be able to perform dreadlocks on natural or chemically relaxed hair. They will be able to carry out braiding on clients own hair or a braiding hairpiece. The learners will also be able to fulfill an after care service which will enhance the service provided

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing client and workstation for dreadlock and braiding techniques
  • Performing dreadlock techniques on natural hair
  • Performing dreadlock extention techniques on natural or chemically relaxed hair
  • Performing braiding techniques using clients own hair
  • Performing braiding techniques using braiding hair piece
  • Discussing, explaining and applying the use of after care products and services 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • A dreadlock or braiding procedure will include the whole head.
  • Dreadlock products will include shampoo, moulding cream, moulding gel, hydrating spray, finishing spray, or similar professional product.
  • Braiding products will include shampoo, hydrating spray, scalp treatments and finishing spray.
  • Dreadlock extentions will include /a minimum of three designs of extensions.
  • Braiding hair pieces will include a minimum of three designs of extensions, straight and any other synthetic hair.
  • Weaving products will include cotton, wool or any other suitable sheering material.

    Hair is sectioned and plaitted in preparation for the dreadlock extensions.

    The artificial dreadlocks are weaved into the sectioned and plaitted hair.

    Client is consulted with during the dreadlock extension procedure to ensure client satisfaction and comfort.

    The dreadlock extention techniques are performed within the stipulated time frame.
