PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard provides a broad introduction to health and safety in a financial service workplace. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner's own context and experience of the world of work. It is intended as part of an induction programme for all learners and specifically for learners who are safety officers in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying potential hazards in a financial services workplace.
  • Indicating how to limit damage to persons and property in the event of an accident or emergency.
  • Indicating how to contribute to the maintenance of security in the workplace.
  • Explaining emergency procedures in a financial services workplace. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should:
  • Hold a GETC or equivalent qualification; or
  • Be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy NQF Level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is health and safety in relation to the learner's own work context.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify potential hazards in the financial services workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Potential hazards are correctly identified and removed, reduced or reported in terms of own level of authority/capacity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instructions relating to exposure to dangerous substances and hazards in a financial services workplace are known and an explanation is given as to why they pose a potential threat to the work environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The kinds of work that require protective clothing are identified and protective clothing is used according to legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Health and safety instructions are followed in applicable to a specific work role. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of each employee being vigilant and reporting hazards and violations of health, safety and security procedures is known and understood in terms of a possible chain of events that could result from not reporting a violation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The location of relevant Health and Safety policies and legislation information is identified in a specific workplace. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Indicate how to limit damage to persons or property in the event of an accident or emergency.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The location of fire extinguishers, hoses and alarms is known in own work context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of fire extinguishers in the building are identified and the use of each is explained and demonstrated competently. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Established procedures relating to the identification of fires and other emergencies are known and followed promptly and correctly in an emergency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Dangerous occurrences are identified and accurately and timeously reported according to established policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Injuries involving individuals are reported promptly to the relevant authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Reasons are given to explain why it is the responsibility of every employee to maintain the safety and security of his/her own work environment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Indicate how to contribute to the maintenance of security in the workplace.

    Security procedures and operating standards are known and followed competently. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security risks in own work environment are identified and actions taken to deal with security risks that are within limits of own authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential security risks outside own authority are identified and reported using familiar and established procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Suspicious behaviour or circumstances are identified and action is taken within own level of authority and using familiar and established procedures.

    Explain emergency procedures in a financial services workplace.

    The established policy is known and understood for emergencies in a specific building. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The location of the planned assembly points and the shortest routes to such points are known and the building is evacuated along the correct route. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The emergency signage in the building is interpreted correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Emergency procedures are explained in a familiar context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Actions to assist a vulnerable individual in an emergency are demonstrated in a specific situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Precautions for dealing with HIV/AIDS in a workplace emergency are known and described in terms of the Universal Precautions.
