PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to develop designs for a range of marketable craft products.
This unit standard contributes to the competence of those who want to develop a career path in the Art, Craft and Design sector, and contributes to greater levels of production and quality in this industry. If learners are competent in this unit standard where they can develop a range of craft products then the general creativity, production quality, and marketing of craft products will improve and increase.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Interpreting, identifying and applying design components of prototypes.
  • Developing marketable ranges of craft products.
  • Assessing craft product ranges.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is recommended that the learner has completed the NQF level 2 National Certificate in Craft Production or equivalent with competencies in producing a craft product.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included in the unit standard where relevant.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Interpret, identify and apply design components of prototypes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Prototype design specifications were explained correctly.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Prototype design refers to an original craft product from which the range will be developed. This can be from a client that can include a real business client or just the facilitator of the unit standard.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Prototype designs were analysed and broken-up in clear steps and components to apply in related range of craft products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Measurements and other relevant information were specified according to prototype design specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Prototype design elements and principles were applied for interpretation of new range of craft products.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Develop marketable ranges of craft products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Specific craft products were identified for development of range.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Prototype design elements and principles were applied during development of new ranges of craft products.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Elements of design include the following visual elements: line, form, shape, texture, colour and contrast.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Prototype design-specific materials, tools and equipment specifications were applied during development of craft product range.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Production processes were taken in account during the development of craft product range.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Optimal production income was secured during the development of craft product range.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Presentations communicated the design briefs or concepts.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Presentation of design can be written, renderings or visual images and recordings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Housekeeping and safety procedures in the context of craft production were adhered to.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Housekeeping refers to optimising the use of resources, record keeping, hygiene, health and safety.

Environmental sustainability criteria were considered during the development of craft product range.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Environment refers to national, social, political, legal and economical resources.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Assess craft product ranges.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Craft product ranges were designed cost effectively.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Appropriate material, tools and equipment were selected according to original craft product designs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Prototype product design specifications were identified and correctly followed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Craft product ranges were designed according to marketable trends.
