PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of the learning credited in this unit standard is to enable learners to operate multiple computer packages relevant to their discipline of design. Learners are also able to practice a variety of alternative production techniques exceeding the core ones.
The unit standards that fall under electives allow learners to expand on their knowledge and abilities gained in the fundamental and core unit standards. These standards are relevant to all learners who will be pursuing careers as practising designers in any number of design fields and disciplines or people practising within the design sectors. People who pursue careers in these sectors contribute directly to the economic development of the country and to the social development of communities, region and the nation as a whole.

Credited learners are capable of:
1. Operating a wide variety of relevant computer software packages.
2. Producing designs using multiple and alternative software and hardware.
3. Contextualising computer technology within the design process, on a theoretical and practical basis.
4. Identifying and selecting alternative production technologies and techniques.
5. Using alternative production techniques to complete a design product.
6. Assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of alternative production processes, techniques and technologies.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. The assessment of learner achievement takes place at providers accredited by the CHE (or the MAPPP SETA or another relevant ETQA) for the provision of programmes that result in the outcomes specified for the qualification that this unit standard forms part of. The CHE (or the MAPPP SETA or another relevant ETQA) is responsible for the moderation of achievement of those learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard. Those assessing or moderating the outcomes of this unit standard must hold a qualification at NQF 6 in the relevant field.
    2. Learners need to demonstrate an ability, beyond the ones outlined the fundamental unit standards, to operate a wide variety of software applications in the production of a final design product.
    3. The production processes techniques are specific to the design discipline. Credited learners need to demonstrate that they are competent at using alternative production techniques and processes to the ones outlined in the fundamental unit standards.
