PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The unit standard is aimed at providing the learner with a working knowledge of Tunnelling and limited Mining operational methods, techniques and use of materials & equipment where the specific objective is to create tunnels and chambers with the associated ventilation and access shafts in all classes of rock material and geological conditions.

The mining referred to is limited to mining techniques required in creating tunnels and access shafts for services like roads, rail, water & waste water reticulation, underground electric power generation stations and channel applications.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate and understanding of and apply methods of Tunnelling and limited Mining operations using certain equipment and materials.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of a professional community of Construction Managers.
The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.
