PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:

Pruning of tea without supervision to ensure correctly pruned tea fields to rejuvenate growth and frame development.

To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:

Literacy, numeracy and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 1.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The scope of this unit standard deals with the pruning of tea fields according to predetermined cycle and height in order to rejuvenate new growth and bush frame development.

The specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard are performed without direct supervision, but with access to standard working procedures and operating instructions. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Prepare for prune process. 
OUTCOME NOTES 
Preparing the work area according to standard working and safety procedures.

Determining a sequence of operations according to standard working procedures.

Selecting appropriate tools and equipment according to standard working and quality procedures.

Selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) according to statutory requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes.
In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:

  • Rejuvenating new growth and bush frame development
  • Pruning to a 3-year cycle
  • Preventing sun scorch by covering bushes with hamper

    Consequences of not:
  • Preventing table rise and loss of crop
  • Adhering to safety procedures
  • Pruning to predetermined pruning cycle
  • Pruning to a predetermined height
  • Removing knotted wood and "crow's feet"
  • Recording pruned bushes per Ha
  • Covering pruned bushes 

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prune tea.

    Reclaiming tables by skiffing in mid winter to predetermined height and according to standard work procedures and policies.

    Pruning tea bushes on a 3-year cycle mechanically or using hand loppers according to required standards, procedures and predetermined 12-year program.

    Selecting and cutting out "crows feet" and knotted wood during pruning according to standard working procedures.

    Covering pruned bush using cut hamper according to standard working procedures.
