PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to understand and articulate their faith more effectively through the study of key Christian doctrines.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe the essential purposes of Christian doctrine
  • Describe some of the major sources of Christian doctrine
  • Describe the key teachings of the Christian Church and explain their significance 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • The broad range of doctrines accepted by the Christian Church generally and historically
  • The elementary purposes and sources of Christian doctrine.

    Describe the purpose of Christian doctrine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of Christian doctrine is explained and discussed with reference to the history the Church and the development of Christian faith. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic aims of Christianity are identified through an expression of the values of Christianity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Aims may include but are not limited to:
    Giving coherent expression to the Christian faith, helping people give meaning to their life experiences, giving believers a sense of belonging and solidarity with the whole Christian Church, enhancing a sense of continuity with believers throughout the history of the Church.

    The influence of Christian doctrine on Biblical life is identified by means of at least three examples.

    At least three examples are given.

    The influence of Christian doctrine on contemporary life is identified by means of at least three examples.

    Describe three sources of Christian doctrine and how they are used. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Sources must include the Bible and the Church's tradition. Other sources may include: reason, experience, denominational emphases.

    Three examples of Christian doctrine are listed from reflection and interaction with others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The selected Christian doctrines are described, using the Bible and the Church's tradition as primary sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The origins of Christian doctrine are traced to place them in a Biblical or historical context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relevance of Christian doctrine in present-day society is discussed in interactions with others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The contribution of each selected source to one selected Christian doctrine is illustrated through examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Three examples from each source. Examples of Christian doctrines may include any aspect of the Nicene Creed, or other statements of faith, such as the Apostles' Creed.

    List and describe key Christian doctrines and explain their significance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Key Christian doctrines are listed based on the Church's teachings. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The doctrines could include teachings on God, creation, anthropology, sin, salvation, trinitology, christology, pneumatology, ecclesiology, death and eschatology.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Key Christian doctrines are explained and discussed with reference to the Church's teachings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Essential elements of the historical Christian faith are listed and discussed by extracting these from selected doctrines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A credal statement such as the Nicene Creed or the Apostles' Creed may be used as a basis for the listing and descriptions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The significance of these doctrines is explained and discussed by relating them to their impact on present-day practices.

    Doctrine, in this Unit Standard, refers to a disciplined study of Christian understandings of God, humanity and the Christian faith in the context of history and the world. Other terms are defined as follows:
  • Creation - the Christian understanding that the world was created by God
  • Angelology - the Christian understanding of created bodiless spiritual powers, including angels, fallen angels and demons
  • Anthropology - the Christian understanding of human nature
  • Sin - the Christian understanding of the way in which evil operates in the world through human beings
  • Salvation - the Christian understanding of the way in which God acts to overcome evil in the world
  • Trinitology - the Christian understanding the nature of God as three persons in one essence
  • Christology - the Christian understanding of the nature and person of Jesus Christ (who he is, and what he is)
  • Pneumatology - the Christian understanding of the nature and work of the Holy Spirit
  • Ecclesiology - the Christian understanding of the nature and role of the Church (the Christian community)
  • Eschatology - the Christian understanding of the end of the present age (world), and its relation to the age to come.
