PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic insight into the broad background of the whole of the Bible and more specific knowledge of the background of selected Biblical books.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the historical, political and social context of the Bible 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners should be competent in Mathematical Literacy and Communication at Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • To include a broad overview of the background of the whole of the Bible
  • To include more detailed knowledge of the context of selected Biblical books 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Outline the historical, political and social background of the Biblical era. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    From 2000 BCE to 150 CE, in the geographical area of the Near East and Mediterranean. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Links between historical and political and social aspects of this period are made with reference to Biblical times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selected historical events are placed on a time line. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Major countries, regions and cities are placed on a map, or a series of maps. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the historical, political and social background of selected Biblical books. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Biblical books that aptly represent historical, political and social conditions are selected through consultation with colleagues and learners. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least 5 books in the Old Testament and 5 in the New Testament.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The historical, political and social aspects of the books are described and discussed with close reference to the times and the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The description show the influence of the background on the historical, political and social events described in the books. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The description is in keeping with insights from non-technical works by Biblical scholars.

    Providers of learning towards this Unit Standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of the relevant ETQA.

    The moderation requirements of the relevant ETQA must be met in order to award credit to learners for this Unit Standard.

    The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the Unit Standard.
