PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who use or intend to use technology when working in a storage, blending and distribution facility. It will empower them to contribute to the productive and safe operation of the facility and to get recognition for the knowledge and skills to do so.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe applicable technology and equipment used in the transfer, storage and blending operations carried out in the above facilities.
  • Carry out relevant operational calculations.
  • Contribute to the achievement of the safety, health and environmental goals applicable at a specific facility.
  • Contribute to the achievement of productivity and economic goals of a specific facility. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in the execution of the duties and activities of a typical field operator working in a storage, blending and distribution facility and have knowledge of the process chemistry and related technology, as well as the safety, health and environmental practices applicable in these operations. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    In the context of this unit standard a site or specific facility's could include large tank farms as found in petroleum refineries, smaller tank farms as found in blending operations and distribution depots and tank farms where liquids/gases are stored.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Common purposes of specific storage, blending and distribution of chemical products.

    The chemical and physical characteristics address the liquids and/or gases encountered at a site that are relevant to the work of an operator in these storage, blending and distribution facilities.

    Characteristics include pressure, temperature and vaporisation, flammability, toxicity, identification of contamination and hazards, colour, smell, viscosity and density.

    Equipment used includes types of vessels, vents and arrestors, flares, pumps, block and bleed, pipe work and blinds, flanges, bunds, filters, separators, coalessors, compressors, conveyors, metering devices, pigs, vapour recover equipment, loading arms and hoses, scales, instrumentation and process control etc. as applicable at a specific site.

    Best practice is the accepted way in which operations are carried out in the majority of operation in South Africa and comparable to international practice.

    Common purposes of tank farms and other similar facilities are described with reference to types of liquids and/or gases stored, blended and transferred to, within and from these facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of equipment and configurations of pipe reticulation are described and identified with reference to their purpose, typical application and performance criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Industry best practice used for conducting transfers, blending and storage is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Operations conducted at a specific site are compared with industry best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Recommendations for change, if applicable, are made using the appropriate communication channels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Documentation, including written reports, is prepared in accordance with site specific instruction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Carry out calculations used in storage, blending and distribution facilities and operations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Calculations could include capacities of tanks, density and mass of liquids and loading/capacity of containers/vessels, flow rates and determination of time for transfers, determination of blend recipes based on ratios, percentages and proportions, Boyle & Charles Laws.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The communication of performance measurement used at a specific site may include written notes and or graphs. Identification of consequences may include the use of calculation that maybe carried out using spreadsheets, or calculators.

    Comment on ways to improve performance may include recommendation on how work procedures/instructions could be changed through communication improved and execution simplified. Comment to be made using appropriate methods and following appropriate communication channels.

    The contribution required of storage, blending and distribution operators is identified and the learner evaluates/comments related to personal contribution according to the way in which the planned daily schedule's activities have been carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of non-conformance with instructions are described with reference to cost implications, effect on internal and external clients and transporters of liquids/gases handled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Comment regarding ways to improve performance is made using the communication channels prescribed at the specific site.

    Compare own contribution to the minimization of waste to the site specific waste management programme.
