PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
To enable a person working in the air conditioning, refrigeration or ventilation Industry to:
  • Identify electrical symbols and components.
  • Understand and describe the functioning of electrical circuits and components.
  • Sketch and construct basic single-phase electrical circuits. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Knowledge of the operation of single-phase air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation equipment.
  • Understanding the fundamentals of electricity.
  • Apply and maintain safety in an electrical environment.
  • Use of tools and test instruments. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Power supplies:
    Maximum 230 volt, single-phase

    Loads:
    Resistive and inductive loads

    Switching devices:
    Single and double pole switches with single or double throw, push buttons, rotary switches.
    Isolators, relays, contactors, time clocks, timers,

    Protection devices:
    Fuses, circuit breakers, earth leakage relays and overload protection devices.

    Single phase electric motors and accessories:
    Shaded pole motors, permanent split motors, split phase motors, capacitor start motors and capacitor start- capacitor-run motors and multi speed fan motors.
    Capacitors, current relays, potential relays and solid-state relays, overload relays, plug tops.

    Controls:
    Thermostats, overheating stats, humidistats, pressure stats, selector switches and smoke detectors.

    Electrical control panel accessories:
    Voltmeters, ammeters, pilot lights, push buttons, lock-out stops, terminals, transformers.
