PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Commission and put into operation of a refrigeration plant. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Understanding of the operation of refrigeration plants, their individual components and the control thereof:
  • Use and maintain refrigeration trade service tools and instrumentation.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings and sketches referring to refrigeration plants.
  • Interpret electrical power and control circuit diagrams relevant to air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Service a refrigeration system and set it in operation.
  • Diagnose operational faults in refrigeration systems and take remedial action or propose corrective action.
  • Explain function and operation of refrigeration circuits as applied to air-conditioning or refrigeration systems and select and explain the function of components, accessories and controls.

    Plans and schedules for the commissioning are drawn up in accordance with project specifications.

    Work activities are planned to produce the required results within the available time.

    The ability to determine resources required in terms of component, spares, people, finances, tools and instrumentation is demonstrated.

    Tools and instrumentation are checked and ensured to be functional and ready for use.

    The ability to liaise with others and co-ordinate resources is demonstrated.

    Work area is checked for hazards. All hazards are identified and corrective action is taken in line with worksite housekeeping procedures.

    Support personnel are utilized in line with their expertise and instructions are given which promote good working relationship and ensure effective work.

    Consequences of non-or part commissioning systems are listed and discussed.

    Instrumentation and tools are used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and correction factors are applied where necessary.

    All electrical and pneumatic controls are tested, calibrated and adjusted in accordance with specified requirements.

    Controls and control devices are checked to ensure that they are connected properly and operating in line with their intended use.

    Electrical systems are checked in compliance with performance and safety requirements.

    Direction of motor and pump rotation is checked and ratings verified.

    Vibration levels of rotary equipment are confirmed to be within specified limits.

    The consequence of poor workmanship is described in terms of system effectiveness, operating costs and safety.

    Refrigerant flow and oil levels are adjusted to performance requirements.

    Performance tests are carried out and data is recorded as required by specified commissioning procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Suction, discharge and liquid temperatures and pressures, superheat, refrigerant and water flow rates, refrigerant levels in receiver and surge drum, temperature of product and room air, humidity, motor current and voltages.

    The nature, extent and cause of deviations in the operation of equipment and components are assessed and corrective action taken.

    Care is taken that the final operating parameters of the plant are within the specified limits.

    Non-conformance of equipment performance with specifications is reported.

    The work is carried out within agreed time frames.

    Consequences of non-conformance of equipment performance are listed and discussed.
