PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
  • To inform persons handling group 1 refrigerants about the requirements of Code of Practice SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) to be adhered to when installing, commissioning, maintaining and repairing refrigeration or air conditioning equipment.
  • To bring the legal requirements of SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) relating to the safe handling of group 1 refrigerants to the person wishing to be accredited by ACRICSA to install, commission repair or maintain refrigeration equipment (including refrigeration equipment associated with air conditioning systems) subjected to these standards 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the person being assessed is already capable to carry out the following tasks:
  • To identify refrigerant containers and refrigeration oils.
  • To transfer, charge and recover refrigerants and refrigeration oil.
    It is further assumed that the person has an understanding of the principles of refrigeration. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Refrigeration systems, containing group 1 refrigerant, including plants associated with air-conditioning systems, other than those listed under clause 1 (Scope) of SANS 10147 (SABS 0147).
  • The person having been assessed on the basis of these notes and found competent will be able to adhere to the standards of SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) when handling group 1 refrigerants to prevent situations that could result in loss of life, injury to persons or damage to refrigeration plants operating with a Group 1 refrigerant as required according to by the OHS act and the Mines Health & safety Act.

    The duty of any person operating, maintaining of repairing refrigeration equipment to advise the owner of the plant of any cases where the installation does not comply with the requirements of the standard and to recommend that the necessary changes be made in order to ensure compliance is stated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 8 
    Generate a report on an installation subject to SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) and using a group 1 refrigerant indicating where the installation does and does not comply with the standards.

    A report, detailing all the applicable non-conformance items and containing recommendations what necessary changes are to be made in order to ensure compliance is generated.

    Supplementary information:

    1. The accreditation based on this assessment does not, in any way, replace the legal requirements for persons who are in charge of refrigeration or air conditioning plants.
    2. These notes are intended for persons working with group 1 refrigerants only. Specific knowledge of group 2 and group 3 refrigerants and the associated plants is required before a person is competent to work on plants containing group 2 or group 3 refrigerants.
    3. This assessment concerns only the safe handling of refrigerants and by no means includes all the requirements stipulated in SANS 10147 (SABS 0147).
    4. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993) and the Mine Health and Safety Act (No. 29 of 1996) incorporated the provisions of SANS 10147 (SABS 0147). Owners of refrigeration equipment (including air-conditioning plants) covered by SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) are legally bound to ensure that this equipment complies with these requirements.
    5. It is the duty of any person installing refrigeration equipment as defined in SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) to ensure the installation complies with the requirements of the standard.
    6. It is the duty of any person operating, maintaining of repairing refrigeration equipment as defined in SANS 10147 (SABS 0147) to advise the owner of the plant of any cases where the installation does not comply with the requirements of the standard and to recommend that the necessary changes be made in order to ensure compliance.
