PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Finishing off structural work, dismantling structures and handing over completed structures in accordance with safety legislation and industry procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of Technical information for the securing of fastenings or specialised attachments. Types and use of measuring equipment. Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to walkways, access, dismantling and storing of lifting equipment and accessories, storage of consumables used to operate lifting equipment.
The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of Structural Steel Erectors who are able to competently use science and technology when finishing off structural work, dismantling structures and handing over structures.
In addition, the learner's ability to interpret and carry out instructions in a competent manner will lead to enhanced quality of workmanship and reduce the costs associated with work having to be redone and the resultant over-run on deadlines.
An enhanced understanding of safety legislation and safety common sense will lead to a notable reduction in the high and often fatal risks associated with work conducted at heights well above ground level.

All tasks and activities associated with the finishing off and handing over of structural steelwork are carried out in accordance with:

  • Range of intermittent quality checks include but are not limited to: structure alignment, completion of structure, correctness of finishes
  • Fastenings and specialised attachments include but are not limited to: bolts, high strength bolts, rivets, Huck bolts, welding, chemical adhesives
  • Structural Steelwork finishing specifications include but are not limited to: structural stability and correctness, paint, fire-protection and insulation, crane gantry alignment
