PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Planning to install solar heating system.
  • Preparing to install and maintain solar heating system.
  • Installing a solar water heater.
  • Connecting associated electrical devices of solar water heaters.
  • Maintaining a solar water heater.
  • Concluding the maintenance of a solar water heater.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

  • An understanding of climate and weather in so much it is a fundamental aspect of renewable energy.
  • How to plan and prepare to perform plumbing works.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Statutory Requirements Definition:
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to OHS Act, SANS Regulations, NRS Code of Practise Local Authority requirements, Manufacturer's specifications.
  • Work site procedures.
  • Solar heating systems refers to stand alone solar water heaters not coupled to a geyser and solar water heaters coupled to a water supply system and geyser.

    Sequence of operation is interpreted and determined as per Job instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Applicable electrical drawings are correctly interpreted and selected to meet job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment and personal protective equipment is selected, inspected and checked for functionality and safety prior to commencement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety procedures related to job requirements and work site procedures are obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Solar water heating system and peripheral equipment and mounting bracket are identified and selected according to job instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Peripheral equipment refers to circulating pump, unidirectional valve and reservoir tank if included and if necessary.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Permission is obtained to carry out task according to instructions and drawings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Appropriate tools are identified and selected to meet the requirements of the task according to statutory requirements.

    Prepare to install and maintain solar heating system.

    Work area is demarcated according to Work site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Solar water heating system and peripheral equipment and mounting bracket are checked in accordance with manufacturer specifications and functional requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Work site is inspected for safety and hazards and corrective action is taken according to statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Installation area is prepared for the placing / mounting and securing of the solar water heater and mounting bracket as per job instructions, drawings and diagrams. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work affecting other field of expertise, contractors etc. are identified and communicated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Install solar water heater.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate tools are selected and used correctly as per manufacturers specifications and work site standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The solar water heater and associated equipment are inspected for functionality to meet desired operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The solar water heater, its mounting bracket and peripheral equipment are installed according to instructions, drawings, diagrams, manufacturers specifications and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The installed bracket is such that the solar water heater faces due North and the tilt of the solar water heater is appropriate for the angle of latitude at the site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not using the tools according to statutory requirements are explained.

    Connect associated electrical devices.

    Consequences of incorrect use of cleaning methods, solvents and materials are explained in accordance with work site procedures.
