PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to perform routine preventive maintenance on a flashlight and boom level crossing warning system by applying signalling engineering practice. The learner will also be able to identify, prioritise and report any corrective maintenance tasks. This will ensure the availability of a functional flashlight and boom level crossing warning system which will contribute in part to a reliable railway signalling system, safe road-rail level crossings, safe and efficient train operations, road safety and effective rail transportation.
