PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this Unit Standard is able to demonstrate an understanding of various terminal and chronic illnesses, especially HIV/Aids, and the ways these may affect relationships and thereby efficiency and productivity in a workplace; the ability to work toward producing a company policy to deal with these issues, ways of communicating this policy and to promote non-discrimination relating to terminal and chronic illnesses such as HIV/Aids in a workplace.

In particular, on completion of this Unit Standard, the learner is able to:
  • Discuss issues of personal privacy and confidentiality related to terminal and chronic illnesses.
  • Assess the status of serious illness, including HIV/Aids, in a workplace.
  • Conduct and report on research on this topic.
  • Deal with assumptions, expectations and fears related to workplace illness.
  • Critique policies related especially to HIV/Aids.
  • Discuss the Department of Labour's Code of Good Practice and the King Codes.
  • Inform a workforce on legal aspects related to HIV/Aids in the workplace.
  • Promote a non-discriminatory work environment in terms of terminal and chronic illness.
  • Relate employment equity and unfair discrimination to serious illness in the workplace.
  • Relate the learning gained in achieving this Unit Standard to Organisational Transformation and Change Management (OT&CM).

    Conduct general and company-specific research on the impact of terminal and chronic illnesses such as HIV/Aids on business.

    A suitable research methodology is selected, explained and defended in a written report.

    Appropriate benchmarks for use are established and documented.

    Research is completed in relation to world, national, local and industry standard status and response to workplace illness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An assessment of the status of a selected company in relation to the research is provided in writing.

    A presentation of the results is delivered to relevant audiences. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Act as facilitator in order to clarify assumptions, expectations and fears raised by stakeholders in relation to the title of this Unit Standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A central database of frequently asked questions in relation to workplace illness, with suitable responses, is established and made available using appropriate technology or procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stakeholder feedback, as a result of workshops to discuss the issues raised by this Unit Standard, is clearly and accurately documented. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A comprehensive information, communication and sensitisation plan is compiled for terminal and chronic illness in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The plan mentioned is implemented in a specific organisation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Critique a company's policy for reacting to terminal and chronic illness, especially HIV/Aids, in the workforce with reference to the Department of Labour's Code of Good Practice as well as the King Code on organisational governance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A presentation is given of the key and salient points in the various reports known as the "King Codes". 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Code of Good Practice developed by South Africa's Department of Labour can be workshopped with peers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An analysis is presented of a particular company's terminal and chronic illness policy in relation to criteria above, with reference to HIV/Aids. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Possible solutions to any gap that may be highlighted in criteria above are clearly and accurately presented to key stakeholders. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Develop a company-wide awareness of elements in South Africa's legal framework around illnesses such as HIV/Aids in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A presentation to management is developed showing the impact of South African legislation on dealing with terminal and chronic illnesses, such as HIV/Aids, in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Responses to the presentation in criteria above are recorded and incorporated into a campaign to raise awareness of these legal issues throughout a selected company. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Develop measures to promote a non-discriminatory work environment with special reference to HIV/Aids and other illnesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various types of discrimination, and the elements of discrimination, are discussed with peers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Constructive measures are established to counter potential discrimination in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Non-discrimination related to HIV/Aids and other illnesses is promoted broadly throughout a particular company. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Examine all current policies and practices in an organisation to ensure compliance with the Employment Equity (EE) Act and establish whether HIV testing takes place within the
    confines of that Act.

    The level of compliance with the EE Act in a particular company can be documented.

    HIV testing, and the promotion thereof, in a chosen company is analysed and a written report is provided, with special reference to anonymity and confidentiality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A study is completed showing the number and types of cases of unfair discrimination as a result of terminal or chronic illness in a particular workplace. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Compile relevant reports on the implementation of a company's policy regarding illness at work.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A lucid report giving meaningful recommendations for dealing with HIV/Aids and other illnesses at work, is compiled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The above report is reviewed with the Employment Equity Committee. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tangible steps are determined to implement the accepted recommendations for dealing with HIV/Aids and other illnesses at work. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be obtained from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance Body, through summative and formative assessment by a registered assessor.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
