PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with context expertise standard(s) will be able to explain various wastewater processes including activated sludge with or without nutrient removal, the operation of biological filters, ponds and wetlands, and the design of secondary settling tanks. This competence will enable the learner to manage the operation of aerobic biological processes at a wastewater works and interpret the results in conjunction with field data. This knowledge will contribute towards the protection of the environment in accordance with legislation. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the employability of the learner in the water sector. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Knowledge of the activated sludge process, computer literacy knowledge of wastewater related legislation, investigative sampling, treatment of wastewater and the operation of the biofilter and pond systems, mathematical calculations at NQF level 4.

  • Nature of wastewater: Chemical and physical characterisation of wastewater and wastewater flow rate and, constituents (organic and inorganic).
  • Wastewater characteristics: Biodegradable and non biodegradable fractions, kinetic and stoichiometric constants.
  • Nutrient removal: Nitrification, denitrification, phosphate and Chemical Oxidation Demand (COD).
  • Secondary sedimentation: Flux theory and solids flux.
  • Systems configuration: University of Cape Town (UCT), Johannesburg, Phoredox, Bardenpho, MLE (Modified Ludzack-Ettinger), Biofilters.
  • Comparative performance: Carbon, nitrogen and phosphate removal, power consumption, limitations.
  • Ponds: Oxidation and maturation.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.

    Integrated assessment

    When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
