PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who extract timber to a landing using a forwarder in a production situation. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the forwarder.
  • Prepare the forwarder for extraction.
  • Prepare for extraction.
  • Extract timber to a landing using a forwarder in a production situation.
  • Park, shut-down and maintain the forwarder after use. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
    Demonstrate knowledge of ground-based machine extraction. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence can be demonstrated on any forwarder, excluding modified tractors and tractor/trailer combinations. Demonstration of competence will take place "on-the-job" in a production situation.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the forwarder.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety features on the forwarder are identified and their purpose explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of overloading and operating the forwarder outside its capabilities are explained in terms of the effect on safety and damage to the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe loading capacity of the crane and the principles involved in loading are explained in terms of manufacturer's requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Loads that can be lifted at various distances from the machine, move timber closer to machine before attempting to lift the load when required, type and size of grab.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Optimal weight and load size to be extracted are identified according to manufacturer's requirements and varying conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Varying conditions include underfoot conditions and slope.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Slope, terrain and ground clearance limitations are explained according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hazards specific to operating forwarders and ways to minimise these are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terrain, slope, ground conditions, machine speed, stability, suitability and state of repair, proximity of other workers and machines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The importance of pre-operational and post-operational checks is explained in terms of prolonging the machine life, maximising productivity, minimising cost, enhancing safety and minimising down-time.

    Service intervals of the forwarder are stated according to manufacturer's requirements.

    Prepare and start-up the forwarder for extraction.

    Tools and equipment required, are checked for completeness and serviceability, and rectifying action is taken, if required.

    All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    Operational requirements are explained in terms of extraction routes, slopes, landing locations, special management zones, timber flow and production target.

    Work area is checked for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Extract timber using a forwarder in a production situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Forwarder is manoeuvred and controlled effectively within safe operating limits specified by the manufacturer and section 4.3.5 of the Guidelines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forward, reverse, left, right, stop, start, gear selection, engine revolutions, braking, speed, travelling empty and loaded. All of the competencies to be performed on flat terrain, gradient and side slope. All of the competencies to be performed on forest roads must be demonstrated on flat terrain and on gradient.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Forwarder performance is continuously monitored and corrective action taken, if required, according to manufacturer's requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Corrective action includes repairing and/or reporting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Crane and grab are positioned for travelling as recommended by the manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Timber is loaded and positioned in the bunk using the crane according to manufacturer's recommendations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machine is positioned for loading; machine is stable; loading brake is activated; within loading capacity of the crane and the bunk; load is balanced and evenly distributed; minimise swing and timber movement of the suspended load.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Timber is off-loaded using the crane according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Communication with support personnel ensures safe and effective operation throughout the operation.

    Communication methods include audio and/or visual.

    Standard operating procedures and safe work practices are adhered to throughout the operation.

    Extraction is performed to meet operational requirements.

    Other phases of the operation are complemented; timber damage, wastage and breakage are minimised; work rate meets pre-determined target; planned extraction routes are used; timber is off-loaded and positioned on the landing as arranged with landing workers and operational requirements.
