PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who extract and transport timber using a tractor and trailer fitted with a self-loading crane in a production situation. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the trailer and crane.
  • Prepare the trailer and crane for extraction and transport.
  • Prepare for extraction and transport.
  • Extract and transport timber using a tractor and trailer fitted with a crane in a production situation.
  • Park the tractor and trailer, shutdown the tractor and crane and maintain the trailer and crane after use.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ground-based machine extraction.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
  • Prepare, operate and maintain a tractor.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence can be demonstrated on any tractor and trailer combination fitted with a crane. Demonstration of competence will take place "on-the-job" in a production situation.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the trailer and crane. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety features related to the trailer and crane are identified and their purpose explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of overloading and operating the trailer and crane outside its capabilities are explained in terms of the effect on safety and damage to the trailer and crane. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safe loading capacity of the crane and the principles involved in loading are explained in terms of manufacturer's requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Loads that can be lifted at various distances from the machine, move timber closer to machine before attempting to lift the load when required, type and size of grab.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Optimal weight and load size to be extracted are identified according to manufacturer's requirements and varying conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Varying conditions include underfoot conditions and slope.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Slope, terrain and ground clearance limitations for the trailer are explained according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hazards specific to operating the machine for extraction and short-haul and ways to minimise these are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terrain, slope, ground conditions, machine speed, stability, suitability and state of repair, proximity of other workers and machines.

    Service intervals of the trailer and crane are stated according to manufacturer's requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety requirements applicable to the operation are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machine safety, entry into felling zones, landings and depots, proximity of other workers and machines.

    All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    Operational requirements are explained in terms of extraction routes, slopes, depot locations, special management zones, timber flow, route to depot and production target. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work area is checked for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Extract and transport timber using a tractor and trailer fitted with a crane in a production situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tractor and trailer is manoeuvred and controlled effectively within safe operating limits specified by the manufacturer and section 4.3.5 of the Guidelines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forward, reverse, left, right, stop, start, gear selection, engine revolutions, braking, speed, travelling empty and loaded. All of the competencies to be performed infield must be demonstrated on flat terrain, gradient and side slope. All of the competencies to be performed on forest roads must be demonstrated on flat terrain and on gradient.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tractor performance is continuously monitored and corrective action taken, if required, according to manufacturer's requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Corrective action includes repairing and/or reporting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Crane and grab are positioned for travelling as recommended by the manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Timber is loaded and positioned in the bunk using the crane according to manufacturer's recommendations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machine is positioned for loading; machine is stable; loading brake is activated if fitted; within loading capacity of the crane, tractor and trailer; load is balanced and evenly distributed; minimise swing and timber movement of the suspended load.

    Timber is off-loaded using the crane according to manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Communication with support personnel ensures safe and effective operation throughout the operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Standard operating procedures and safe work practices are adhered to throughout the operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Extraction is performed to meet operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other phases of the operation are complemented; timber damage, wastage and breakage are minimised; work rate meets pre-determined target; planned extraction routes and routes to depot are used; timber is off-loaded and positioned on the depot as arranged with depot workers and operational requirements.

    Park the tractor and trailer, shut-down the tractor and crane, and maintain the trailer and crane after use.
