PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare the final upholstery covering components in a safe manner and in line with standards. The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing equipment, tools and workstation.
  • Preparing fabric.
  • Planning and marking fabric for cutting.
  • Cutting out upholstery components.
  • Marking and sorting upholstery components. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in basic numeracy and literacy equivalent to ABET Level 4. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to the National Certificate in Furniture Making, NQF level 1.

    Upholstery fabrics, templates and lays are checked with specification and confirmed to be correct.

    Fabrics are checked for defects and faults. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fabrics, templates and lays not to specification are rectified, replaced and reported to the relevant person.

    Fabrics are correctly matched for colour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fabric is positioned and rolled out square, true and flat on the cutting table.

    Unused part rolls are returned to appropriate storage.
