The following criteria include, but are not limited to:
  • Design requirements: furniture type; finish; colour; fittings; embellishments
  • Design ideas: drawings; orally; samples
  • Existing design: adjustments required; amendments required; evident problems; problems arising
  • Design brief: the furniture item; resources; the cost of the item; development time scales; production methods
  • Necessary changes and adaptations required: to specifications; to aesthetic appearance; to durability; to standardise components; to simplify production
  • Incorporated into design requirements: at design stage; at outset of work; as work is in progress
  • Evaluation to meet: design requirements; aesthetic appearance; agreed cost; internal constraints and limitations
  • Organisational requirements: policies; procedures; instructions
  • Prototypes: initial; adapted; final
  • Prototype ideas: oral; visual; sketches; drawings - 2D and 3D
  • Adaptations: based on production methods and processes; design brief requirements; template; jigs and mock-up development and production; market; materials; machinery and equipment requirements
  • Adaptations to: the materials used; prototype components; features and visual effect of the item
  • Adaptations and modifications: self identified; identified by prototype group; to aesthetic appearance; to materials; to process and production methods.
  • Potential problems: technical; resources; budgetary; time frame; materials; equipment

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Provide design and prototype ideas.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Design brief is identified and confirmed with relevant personnel

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Previous experience of work on similar prototypes is evaluated for possible contribution to the current brief

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Design possibilities and approaches in the brief are identified, explored and assessed to produce prototype ideas

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Manufacturing methods are identified and evaluated for their potential to achieve what is required

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Prototype templates, jigs and mock-ups are produced and used and their effect on prototype designs are determined

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Prototypes which have the greatest potential for success are developed in accordance with prototype development stage and design briefs constraints

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Design prototype presentation is provided to relevant personnel, adaptations are identified and final design is agreed

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Develop and adapt design

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Necessary changes and adaptations required to design are identified and evaluated

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Necessary changes and adaptations required are agreed with appropriate personnel

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
New or adapted specifications resulting from changes are provided to relevant personnel according to organisational requirements

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Knock-on effect on proposed changes is identified and evaluated to determine optimum resolution of adaptations required

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Agreed changes and adaptations are incorporated into design requirements

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Carry out and evaluate prototype adaptations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Prototype adaptation requirements are confirmed with the relevant personnel in accordance with design brief

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Potential impact of adaptations are evaluated to determine adaptation requirements and viability

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Templates and jigs adaptations are determined and are produced to meet agreed prototype adaptations

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Prototype is made, and the most appropriate options determined to achieve final design

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Production constraints and problems are identified and options and solutions are determined

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Final design solution takes account of health and safety and legal environmental requirements
