PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can perform the manual handling tasks in their specific
workplace in the relevant wood products environment as per work instructions, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Locate, identify and assemble the material, equipment, tools and instruments that have to be manually handled.
  • Pick up (lift) the load for movement to designated point of delivery.
  • Move/carry the load to designated point of delivery.
  • Deposit (put down) load at designated point of delivery.
  • Explain and carry out the safety and health measures in the relevant work area.
  • Explain and apply the environmental management aspects in the relevant work area. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this unit standard. Learners should be competent in communication and mathematical Literacy at ABET 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    (Choose from one of the following:) Wood Preservation, Tannin Extraction, Trusses, Charcoal Manufacture, Match Manufacture, Bulk Bin, Box and Pallet Repair and Manufacture, Veneer and Plywood, Fibreboard and Chipboard.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment which covers the relevant workplace with all its equipment, tools and instruments.
  • The spread of raw material and products produced by the operation.
  • The general work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to this workplace.
  • Manual handling aids and equipment.
  • All potential relevant ergonomic principles.
  • All the personnel involved in this workplace.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in a wood products operation.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in the various Wood Product activities and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Locate, identify and assemble the material, equipment, tools and instruments that have to be manually handled.

    Pick up (lift) the load for movement to designated point of delivery.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process of manually moving/transporting item/s to a designated point of delivery is performed in a manner that proves that the learner knows and understands the relevant ergonomic principles involved in this process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The learner performs the task as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relevant item/s is/are manually moved/transported to the designated point of delivery employing the prescribed ergonomic principles and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    This task is performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Deposit (put down) load at designated point of delivery.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedures followed in the manually depositing/putting down a load proves that the learner knows and understands the ergonomic principles involved in the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The learner performs this task as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The prescribed ergonomic principles are employed in the depositing/putting down of the load as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    This task is performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Explain and carry out the safety and health measures in the relevant work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The health and safety measures pertaining to this work area are correctly explained and carried out as prescribed by the safety work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The learner demonstrates the required level of knowledge of these measures and the prescribed level of skill in performing them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The applicable safety and health measures are correctly explained and performed in the prescribed manner at the correct level of responsibility. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Explain and apply the environmental management aspects in the relevant work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The industry's environmental management principles are explained correctly as described in the safety work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for the application of these principles are explained at the level prescribed for his/her level in the relevant work area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The environmental management principles relevant to this work area are correctly applied during the work process, while working as an efficient member of a productive team or unit. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
