PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who operate a debarking machine, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Check and start up the machine
  • Feed logs into the machine
  • Debark the logs
  • Shut down the machine
  • Clean the machine 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 3;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Check and start up the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The hydraulic oil level is checked and topped up if required before starting up as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The locking bar is removed from the debarker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The machine is switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ramp teeth are checked to ensure that they move up the ramp. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ramp out-feed conveyor is checked to ensure that it moves forward and backward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The in-feed conveyor is checked to ensure that it moves downward, upward, forward and backward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The out-feed conveyor is checked to ensure that it moves forward and backwards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Feed logs into the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Logs are fed one at a time into the ramp out-feed conveyor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The log is fed in to the in-feed conveyor that has been tilted upward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The in-feed conveyor is stopped and lowered as soon as the log reaches the debarker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The log is conveyed until its front part is between the debarker. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Debark the logs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Various size logs are debarked when the signals from the Saw Operator and Waste Remover are given as per production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The logs are debarked in such a way that the first and the last part of each log are not tapered with. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bark and pulp is removed to the required specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Debarking is stopped when the Saw Operator or Waste Remover gives a signal to that effect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Debarked logs are moved out of the out-feed conveyor if the signal from the Saw Operator is to that effect. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Shut down the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The two sides of the debarker are fully retracted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The in-feed conveyor is tilted upward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The machine is switched off as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The key is removed in accordance with safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The locking bar is inserted and the side debarker, which is on the cabin side, is locked as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Clean the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The barks on and around the debarker are removed and disposed of in the waste conveyor as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The barks that are under the debarking unit are removed and disposed of in the waste conveyor as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
