PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for people who wish to enroll for a learnership (or skills programme) in the Lumber Milling industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the details of the equipment, processes and procedures in the relevant workplace, and his/her place in it,
  • The details regarding - work procedures, safety and health measures, and
  • Environmental management aspects relevant to the specific workplace, and what these require of him/her.

    The successful achievement of this unit standard will supply the learner with the required background to effectively and efficiently perform the relevant tasks in the specific workplace in the lumber mill, and to enroll for subsequent higher levels of training in this field.

    The lumber milling industry urgently requires appropriately trained persons.

    The achievement of this unit standard will contribute towards ensuring that learners/workers are correctly trained and qualified to perform the relevant tasks according to industry accepted norms.

    The achievement of this unit standard is a building block in the learner's development along a structured career path, and will open up new opportunities for improving him/her-self both socially and economically. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to ABET Level 3, or school Grade 8.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed Learner who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform the relevant person/s, to request management to arrange for his/her assessment by the relevant assessor/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed learner must arrange with the provider of his/her training for assessment.

    Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written testes or on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and/or after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative on conclusion of the training programme for this unit standard. Assessment will take place at the venue or workplace designated by the assessor/s.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor by the above-mentioned ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of the provisioning of the learning that will enable compliance with this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the above-mentioned ETQA.
  • Moderation of the above-mentioned assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the above-mentioned ETQA.
