PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard requires learners to reflect on their interests and abilities in order to empower them to make informed life decisions. It is intended for the unemployed, out of school youth and employees faced with a change in employment status. It could be included as an elective in any workplace qualification.

The qualifying learner is capable of
  • Understanding him/herself as a unique individual.
  • Identifying own role in society.
  • Using a variety of strategies to deal with life situations.
  • Making an informed life decision based on self knowledge.

  • Personal issues include but are not limited to issues relating to the learners own situation.
  • Strategies to cope with life situations include but are not limited to being assertive, negotiation techniques, dealing with success or failure and dealing with positive or negative criticism.

    1. Own strengths and weaknesses are identified, based on self-reflection, and recorded in a personal profile.

    2. Own interests, abilities, likes and dislikes are identified and added to the personal profile.

    3. An indication is given of what in the learner's opinion make him/her unique.

    3. The values and attitudes of a particular community are explored in terms of how community values and attitudes influence the learner's role in that community.

    4. The learner's role in the greater South African society is identified with reference to the basic human rights enshrined in the South African Constitution.

    1. Strategies to deal with personal issues are demonstrated in role-play situations.

    3. Support systems available to the learner are identified and an indication is given of the learner's own role in being supportive and using a support system.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual, practical and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied as per the ETQA`s criteria.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
