PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Preparing to erect scaffolding, erecting scaffolding, dismantling and storing scaffolding and demonstrating a knowledge of scaffolds and scaffold components.
These learning outcomes form part of the elective learning in the "national certificate in construction".

This unit standard will contribute to the development of competent construction workers.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment.

The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:

ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Learners will perform the tasks listed in this unit standard under direct supervision
  • Scaffolding includes but is not limited to: Standard and system types, up to 3m, tower and tie-in scaffolding.
  • Preparation of scaffolding includes but is not limited to: Cleaning and testing threads.
  • Given instructions includes but is not limited to: True to line, plumb and specified dimensions, guard rails and toe boards.

    Shortages and damaged materials are reported to the designated personnel.

    The erected scaffold is tied and braced to ensure firmness and stability during work activities.

    The erected scaffold is checked after completion and is in accordance with work schedules.

    All tools, equipment and personal protective equipment required for the task is identified and selected and ready for use at work areas.

    The consequences of overloading a scaffold are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of good and poor workmanship is understood and applied.
