PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships
  • Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures
  • Investigate problems in mathematical and real-life situations
  • Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are competent in Working with numbers, operations with numbers, relationships between numbers, understanding patterns functions and algebra and reading and writing at ABET level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Patterns not limited to sequences involving constant difference or ratio are extended.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Patterns not limited to sequences involving constant difference or ratio are created.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Relationships between two quantities that vary together e.g. the length of a square and its area are identified and examples given.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Generalisations are identified, expressed and verified and used to make predictions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Output and input values and the relationship between them are determined correctly.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Symbols (e.g. boxes, letters) are used to represent unknown quantities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The concept of variable is used to describe generalisations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Patterns are illustrated using words, flow-diagrams, formulae, tables and plotting points on a
    system of axes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Investigate and solve problems in mathematical and real-life situations.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Problems should include contexts that relate to human rights, social, economic, cultural, health and environmental issues

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Information derived from tables and graphs is used to answer relevant questions related to the given data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Appropriate axes are used to represent information with graphs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Linear equations are solved by trial and improvement.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Contextualised problems are modelled and solved using various representations such as graphs and tables.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Algebraic properties are used to simplify numerical expressions (including commutative, associative and distributive properties).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Equivalent expressions for simple algebraic expressions are generated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Simple linear equations are solved by trial and improvement.
