PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard will enable a community health worker to promote the key family practices according to current protocols of the Department of Health relating to childhood illnesses.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

Promote growth and development of infants from birth to two years

Assist the family to prevent disease and accidents in the home

Assist with the management of common illnesses and accidents in the home

Promote immunisation compliance

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

Childhood is from birth to six years

Parties involved in the integrated management include parents/partners, community support structures and include multi-sectoral involvement

Work is conducted under the supervision of a qualified health worker

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Promote growth and development of infants from birth to two years.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The rights of the child are explained and promoted in accordance with the South African Constitution.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Different feeding options are explained in terms of the method, common problems and infant nutritional requirements.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Feeding options include formula and breast-feeding, bottle and cup and spoon methods.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The importance of hygiene and sterilisation are explained in terms of the effect on infant health and susceptibility to infection.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

The advantages of complementary feeding are explained in terms of the achievement of a good nutritional state.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

The benefits of physical and psycho-social stimulation are explained and techniques demonstrated to enhance development from birth to two years.

Assist the family to prevent disease and accidents in the home.

OUTCOME RANGE

Sanitation and hygiene; Common diseases including but not limited to: diarrhoea, upper respiratory infections, TB, HIV/AIDS and STIs; malaria.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The different techniques of hand-washing are demonstrated and explained in terms of preventing disease and transmission of infection.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Vector-borne diseases are identified and the actions taken to prevent the spread of these diseases are appropriate to the given situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The prevention and management of common childhood illnesses is promoted in terms of accepted protocols.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Hygienic practices are promoted in terms of safe water, sanitation and waste disposal.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

Home safety and the prevention of accidents is promoted in accordance with accepted safe practices.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

Child abuse is recognised and appropriately referred in accordance with local protocols.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Child abuse includes physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3

Assist with the management of common illnesses and accidents in the home.

OUTCOME RANGE

Common illnesses include but are not limited to measles, mumps, chicken pox, diarrhoea, coughs, colds, impetigo, malaria, fevers, infestation by worms, scabies, lice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Illnesses are identified in terms of their signs and symptoms.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Basic treatment and care is provided for childhood illnesses which is appropriate to the illness identified.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Accidents and injuries are managed in a manner that minimises the extent of the injury.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

Basic First Aid, including Artificial Respiration (AR) and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for infants and children.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Situations are assessed and referrals made in accordance with the specific situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

The need for professional treatment is recognised and referrals made are appropriate to the requirements of the situation.

Promote immunisation compliance.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Optimal use of health services during pre and post partum period and delivery is promoted in terms of parental support and assistance to the infant.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Immunisation is promoted and encouraged in terms of the currently recognised schedule, e.g., the Road-to-Health chart.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Assistance with follow up care and treatment is provided in terms of promoting a healthy lifestyle and development.

Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
