PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who have achieved this unit standard are capable of taking fingerprints, palm prints and footprints in line with the set requirements of the Criminal Procedure Act.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Identify the need for taking fingerprints
  • Take classifiable fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints using the prescribed methods and equipment
  • Complete the fingerprint forms and distribute

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the safety in society environment and more specifically within the policing discipline by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the safety in society environment.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the need to take fingerprints.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The empowerment to take fingerprints is explained in line with the relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The persons of whom fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints should be taken is identified as stipulated in the relevant legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The need is identified for fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints are explained according to relevant legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Take classifiable fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints using prescribed methods and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The three ways in which fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints can be taken is explained to obtained classification prints according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The advantages and disadvantages of each way is explained to differentiate the understanding between each way. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The taking of fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints is demonstrated in line with each way to ensure classification prints according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The method by taking fingerprints, palm prints and sole prints is demonstrate in all three ways to ensure classification prints. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Complete the fingerprint forms and distribute. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The fingerprint documentation is completed to ensure the liability of the prints according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Sections A to F is completed to ensure the receiving of the classification according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Completed fingerprint, palm prints and sole prints are inspected and signed by a senior member before sending to Criminal Record Centre for classification according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Finger print register is completed to ensure the evidence what fingerprints was taken according to organizational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures
    2. Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. An assessor observes currently employed candidates carrying out their normal work duties. They may also be asked to carry out simulated tasks and to answer written and/or oral questions.
    3. Candidates studying towards a Unit Standard, and who are not currently employed, will also be assessed using variety of assessment tools
    4. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA
    5. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    The standard describes competent performance in doing physical techniques that will enhance their job performance, and lay down the criteria by which competence should be judged, as well as the range of circumstances in which competence should be demonstrated.

    Integrated assessment methods and tools will allow the candidate to demonstrate that she/he has acquired knowledge of and can safely and effectively apply competence identified in this unit standard.

  • Written reports (e.g. tests, exams, case studies, projects, registers, logbooks, workbooks)

    These methods must be carefully selected based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method of assessing knowledge or on-job demonstration of practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes.
