In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners found competent in this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of psychrometry and the use of psychrometric and density charts. Learners will be able to perform basic psychrometry calculations.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communications at NQF Level 2
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
All explanations and demonstrations are according to specified requirements.

Specified requirements include relevant legal and site-specific requirements and are contained in one or more of the following documents:

    Legal:
  • OHS Act and Regulations
  • Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations
  • Guideline for mandatory Codes of Practice

    Site-specific:
  • Managerial instructions
  • Codes of Practice
  • Company Standards
  • Standard Task Procedures
  • Health Management Program
  • Risk Assessment Documentation
  • Working Guides
  • Manufacturers' specifications

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of psychrometric fundamentals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The need for establishing and maintaining thermal conditions that will ensure a safe, healthy and productive environment is correctly explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The units of psychrometry are correctly explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The gas laws pertaining to thermal conditions are defined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The physical properties of an air-water vapour mixture are defined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    Heat transfer processes are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Demonstrate understanding of psychrometric and density charts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The values off psychrometric charts are correctly read.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Charts are used to demonstrate the interpretation of psychrometric processes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The use and application of Lombard's' air density charts is correctly explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Perform basic psychrometry calculations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The application of the gas laws is demonstrated by using values obtained from psychrometric charts.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The interpolation of psychrometric properties between charts for different barometric pressures is demonstrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
End point values involving changes in heat and moisture content of air are calculated and plotted by using initial values obtained from psychrometric charts.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Solve problems related to the use and interpretation of psychrometric charts and by recommending remedial and preventive measures.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as a member of a team/group/organisation/community by accepting, interpreting and delegating instructions correctly, if and when required, in a context-appropriate manner.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively by meeting specified requirements, recording test results in specified formats, and taking appropriate action where necessary.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, organise and critically evaluate information to correct for conditions, environmental factors, and limitations that can influence readings, interpret information obtained, and recommend appropriate remedial action.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematics and language skills in the modes of oral and written presentations to record and report test results.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically (showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others) to select the appropriate methods for working with psychrometric charts.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by taking appropriate actions based on the evaluation of test results and reporting results to relevant designated persons, confirming that a specific observation, inference, action or decision can have an interrelated effect.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
