PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for a learner within the fabrication and welding fields. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to repair battered rail ends safely by means of welding and grinding processes and to a high degree of accuracy in accordance with required quality specifications and standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and selecting the correct rail-grinding machine.
  • Identifying, select and use of the correct equipment, tools and material.
  • Identifying the different rail profiles.
  • Operationally testing of equipment.
  • Applying safe working procedures and instructions related to repairing battered rail ends.
  • Repairing battered rails ends in accordance with the prescribe procedures, instructions and specifications.
  • Performing none destructive test on rails.
  • Performing pre- and post heating procedures correctly.
  • Dealing with unforeseen circumstances during the shearing operation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare machines, equipment and resources prior to the repairing of battered rail ends.

    The correct fire fighting equipment is obtained and checked according to company policies, procedures and specifications.

    The correct personal protective equipment is identified, obtained and used at all times as required.

    Vehicle inspection is done in accordance with company procedures and specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Applicable fire-fighting equipment is placed in the work area safely and correctly and fire hazards are identified, limited or removed according to company policies, procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    On-track protection is placed correctly and timeously according to company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Roll marks on rails are identified correctly and the applicable work procedure(s) are applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Correct electrodes are selected and re-baked according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Battered rail ends are measured, location is logged in accordance with company-specific procedures and specifications, with the specific repair process determined correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Fish-plates are removed and rail ends are cleaned and checked for cracks/ovality by means of non destructive tests in accordance with company specific procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Preparatory grinding to remove loose metal and cracks on rail crown is performed safely and correctly in accordance with company specific-procedures and specifications.

    Extremities of defect on the rail are measured and marked out correctly in accordance with company specific procedures and specifications.

    Preheating process is performed correctly and safely in accordance with company specific procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct welding process is performed safely and correctly according to company specific procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Post-weld controlled cooling process is performed safely and correctly according to company specific procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Grinding process is performed safely and correctly according to company specific procedures and specifications.

    Excess weld metal at the rail end is cut off square in accordance with set standards.

    Measurements are taken to ensure that battered rail ends conform to specified tolerances as per company specific specifications.

    Equipment, tools and consumables are removed from track safely and correctly, and work area is cleaned in accordance with company and legislative safety policies procedures and specifications.
