This unit standard is for people who control weeds with herbicides.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for chemical weed control.
  • Apply chemical to weeds.
  • Practice safe working procedures when using agrochemicals.
  • Maintain equipment.

    Prepare for chemical weed control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of chemical weed control is explained in terms of the effect weeds have on crop growth, access, safety, water run off, fire prevention and aesthetics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is inspected for serviceability and corrective action is taken in line with company specific procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Corrective action includes maintenance, repairing, replacing and reporting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is transported and carried in line with company and/or legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment is selected appropriately for the task at hand. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply chemicals to weeds.

    Total, cone, interrow and ring spray; hack and squirt, ring bark, cut stump, bashing and frilling.

    Work is carried out at a rate which meets predetermined production and quality standards.

    Safe working practices and procedures, the use of personal protective equipment and hazard assessment are adhere to according to company policy and legal requirements.

    Equipment calibration is confirmed according to chemical application and specifications.

    Carrier is of correct quality and type.

    Symptoms and effects of agrochemical poisoning are explained using examples.

    Action to take in the event of agrochemical poisoning is explained using practical examples.
