This unit standard is for people involved in suppressing a wildfire using a water pump.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Operate and refuel a water pump.
  • Maintain water pumps according to manufacturers specifications.
  • Refill water from a reserve supply according to manufacturer's operating procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Operate and refuel a water pump. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Start and stop procedures; refuel procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Water pump is operated according to manufacturer's operating specifications/procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fuel level; fuel switch - open and closed; on/off button/switch; choke and accelerator adjustment; open/close valve directions and settings; priming.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Water pump is refueled according to manufacturer's operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correct fuel type; fuel - uncontaminated and correct mixture; relevant valves are operated in accordance manufacturer's operating procedures.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Maintain water pumps, nozzles and hoses.

    The water pump is checked for serviceability in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Checklists; Report faults to relevant authorities.

    Hoses are laid out, inspected and stored in accordance with Industry standards.

    Cracks, leaks; couplings and sealing rings; percolated and lined hose; mildew; seals in couplings.

    Refill water from reserve supply.

    Water tank is refilled by suction in accordance with manufacturer's operating procedures.

    Suction sieve placement; position of valves.

    Water tank is refilled by gravity feed in accordance with standard operating procedure.
