A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Operate a Rooibos cutting machine.
  • Cut the raw material to customer specifications.
  • Ensure that the maximum yield is obtained.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply the relevant safety regulations for the operation of the cutting machines. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The range includes but is not limited to: PPC, PPE, functional capacity, safety guards, safety SOP's, good housekeeping.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The necessity of wearing the correct PPC. and PPE is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why the health and functional capacity of an operator must be confirmed before work commences, are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The specific safety requirements, as per the company's Standard Operating Procedures that must be applied when using the cutting machines are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons why the safety guards must be in place while operating the cutting machines are explained.

    The procedures for the inspection of the safety equipment are applied according to company requirement.

    The method and procedures for sharpening the blades are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The routine replacement of the wearing parts of the cutting machine is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The re-assembly of the cutting equipment is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The lubrication points on the cutting machine are indicated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The type of lubricants and the methods of applying these are described.

    Operate a Rooibos cutting machine.

    The procedures for feeding the cutting machine are demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct operation of the cutting machine is demonstrated.

    The adjustment of the "length of cut" is demonstrated.

    Convey and transfer the cut product from the cutting mill.

    The material is conveyed from the cutting deck to the discharge chute according to standard operating procedures.
