PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Recognise the correct time to harvest young and mature Rooibos.
  • Apply hygiene practices when harvesting.
  • Apply Rooibos harvesting techniques.
  • Utilize knowledge of harvesting on a Rooibos Production farm.

    The range includes but is not limited to: safety procedures, PPC ( Personal Protective Clothing ), PPE ( Personal Protective Equipment ), chemical handling practices.

    The correct PPC to be worn when harvesting is detailed.

    The importance of using the appropriate PPE is explained.

    The safe use of the cutting equipment is demonstrated.

    The safety procedures that must be adhered to when working with hazardous chemicals are described.

    Show an understanding of the hygiene practices that are necessary when harvesting.

    The procedures for the sterilizing of the cutting equipment are demonstrated.

    The importance of harvesting after the residual period of the pesticide / herbicide has elapsed, is explained.

    The procedures for the monitoring of the Rooibos plant for the presence of pests are demonstrated.
