PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of reading and setting processing instruments,
  • Read and interpret measuring instruments on a processing line,
  • Adjust and set processing measuring instruments,
  • Record the measurements of the processing instruments.

    This unit standard is intended for a person working in a production or packaging environment who needs to read and adjust instruments on production or packaging equipment.

    Range: Measuring equipment refers to temperature reading instruments, pressure reading instruments, process speed instruments, counting reading instruments and mass reading instruments.

    This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner with in the manufacturing environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of manufacturing and assembly. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the manufacturing and processing environment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context of this unit standard is for anyone who works in a production or packaging environment who needs to perform read and adjust instruments on production or packaging equipment. Instruments can include mass balances, temperature recording instruments, pressuring instruments, speed processing instruments, electronic counters.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is moderate in range, established and familiar and offers clear choices of routine responses. The learning demand employs basic operational knowledge and readily available information. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in sub-trades.

    Basic science and technology refer to pressure, temperature, density, viscosity, and photocells.

    2. The importance of setting and adjusting values on processing instruments are explained according to standard operating procedures.

    3. The importance of calibrating processing instruments is explained according to standard operating procedures.

    4. The procedures of identifying faulty equipment are identified according to standard operating procedures and problem solving principles.
