PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners and officials within the port control and admissions environment to improve professionalism and enhance the quality of service delivery. A learner acquiring this unit standard will be able to control and administer admission of people to, sojourn in and departure from the Republic of South Africa.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Verify documentation to check for authenticity and validity of endorsements.
  • Apply entry and departure requirements in accordance with legal criteria.
  • Apply adjudication and review provisions.
  • Capture and record immigration related data.
  • Process applications for issuance and extension of permits and visas.

    The achievement of this unit standard will contribute to the full development of any learner within the immigration environment and more specifically within the port control and admissions discipline by providing recognition, further mobility and portability within the field. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social, economic and cultural transformation and upliftment within the safety in society environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range covers the role and purpose of port control and admissions within in the context of the immigration legal framework in the South African society. The range includes practice and culture of safety in society particularly within immigration, the relevant regulatory framework, the main activities of port control and admissions, and stakeholders nationally and internationally.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate, as learners need to be able to exercise judgement in terms of port control and admission.

    Travel documents are verified for acceptability by South Africa in accordance with the current legislation.

    Visual indicators on the passport are compared with the physical person to ensure features correlate with each other.

    Security features in a passport are analysed to detect counterfeited activity.

  • Counterfeited activity can include - counterfeited stamps.
  • Equipment includes but is not limited to ultra violet light, magnifying glass.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documents are analysed for validity and authenticity.

    Documents include but are not limited to - travelling ticket, vaccination cards, permit, marriage and birth certificates, identity document, permanent residence.

    The sequence of travel patterns is reviewed to determine illogical travel routings to inform decision-making.

  • Illogical travel routings can include refusal of entry or departure at certain countries.
  • Decision making would lead to but are not limited to provision of information, start investigation, determine health risk.

    Sections of the current legislation are applied with regards to admission of persons.

    Profiling information is analysed to established whether the applicant is not a possible suspect.

    Checking procedures are followed by ensuring it is line with the criteria of the movement control system.

    Prohibited persons and exceptions are classified in line with current legal provisions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prohibited persons include but not limited to those infected with or carting infectious communicable or other diseases, outstanding warrant, previously deported and not rehabilitated.

    Undesirable persons are identified and declared in line with current legal provisions.

    Undesirable persons include but not limited to those likely to become a public charge, identified by the Minister, judicially declared incompetent, unrehabilitated insolvent.

    Asylum transit permits are issued in accordance with the current legislation.

    Distinctions between exemptions, waivers and cross-borders are made and applied in accordance with the current legislation.
