PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a cleaning services environment. Qualifying learners are able to present him/herself as a healthy, well-groomed and well-behaved person in a commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, food handling, domestic and health care cleaning environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The learner has the speaking and listening ability equal to an ABET Level 1 Com 101 standard and/or any other communication skill that will enable him/her to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. The scope of this unit standard is to any person in a variety of work environments.
2. In the context of this unit standard, personal hygiene refers to habits relating to personal cleanliness and health at home and at work. Grooming refers primarily to habits and behaviour that affects other people`s perception of the individual.
3. The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, no generation of new ideas is needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others.

RANGE STATEMENTS THAT REFER TO ASSESSMENT CRITERIA IN THIS UNIT STANDARD

1. Hands need to be washed after smoking, eating, sneezing, blowing nose, handling waste, etc.
2. Health problems include but are not limited to hepatitis, TB, diarrhea, food poisoning, influenza, etc.
3. Unhygienic behaviour includes but is not limited to spitting, coughing and sneezing without the hand/tissue in front of the mouth/nose, scratching body parts, sharing personal items and handling of chewing gum.
4. Good hygiene includes but is not limited to cleanliness of hair, body and teeth. Sneezing / blowing nose requires covering nose using tissue paper, blowing into tissue and discarding used tissue paper immediately after use. In a sensitive work environment, the use of handkerchiefs is not recommended.
5. Personal items include but are not limited to tooth brushes, hairbrushes, face cloths, razors, bath towels, bath soap, water for washing.
6. The unacceptable use of tobacco products includes but is not limited to regulations as per the law, the spreading of disease (cross contamination) and smoking in danger areas. It also refers to chewing tobacco, using snuff and throwing cigarette butts on floors.
7. Personal grooming can include but is not limited to clean and well-kept shoes, hair, body hair, facial hair, nails, nail varnish, cosmetics and jewellery.
8. Protective clothing includes but is not limited to headgear, eye protection, overalls, uniforms, aprons, loose sleeves, gloves, footwear and safety shoes.
9. Protective clothing sometimes should not be worn when stipulated in company requirements. This typically includes when off duty, outside of food or pharmaceutical processing plants due to contamination risks, when going to toilets, when eating, when off the premises or when travelling to/from work.
10. Common contagious diseases include but are not limited to diarrhoea, tuberculosis (TB), pink eye (conjunctivitis), and influenza. (Although measles, mumps, chicken pocks and other childhood diseases are contagious, they are less common in adults and no the main focus of this unit standard)
11. Limiting the spread of disease includes but is not limited to regular hand washing, keeping people away from the sick person, covering nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, not touching any body fluids, washing cups, plates and cutlery thoroughly with hot water between use, not sharing cups or eating utensils, washing linen.
