PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a cleaning services environment. Qualifying learners are able to clean building surrounds. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The learner has the speaking and listening ability equal to an ABET Level 1 Com 101 standard and/or any other communication skill that will enable him/her to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to clean building surrounds or big indoor surfaces with mechanical or manual sweeping equipment. Any surface or object that is lower than 3 meters is regarded as the surface of building surrounds.
2. In the context of this unit standard, manual sweeping refers to brooms and push behind sweepers, mechanical sweeping equipment includes, but is not limited to truck-mounted, ride-on or walk-behind machines.
3. The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, very repetitive and familiar, no generation of new ideas is needed and the person has no responsibility for the learning of others.

RANGE STATEMENTS THAT REFER TO ASSESSMENT CRITERIA IN THIS UNIT STANDARD

1. Areas that need to be cleaned include, but are not limited to parking lots, under cover parking, walkways, Port Cochere (roof/cover in front of a main entrance) and compactor areas.
2. Surfaces include, but are not limited to power floated concrete, parking lots, tarmac and paving.
3. Surfaces and areas include, but are not limited to tarmac, concrete screed, parking lots, paving and power floated concrete.
4. Additional tools to sweeping equipment include, but are not limited to side brooms.
5. Protective clothing includes, but is not limited to gloves, overalls, boots, wet weather gear and visual safety vests.
6. Removal of litter includes picking up litter or vacuuming litter with an outside vacuum cleaner, "Billy goat" or picking litter up by hand.
7. Keeping building surrounds clean includes, but is not limited to hygiene, safety, image of worksite, pest control and prevention of production losses.
8. Areas and objects include poles, benches, outside furniture, signage's, lights, stairways, railings, fire extinguishers and dustbins.
Maintenance problems in building surrounds include, but are not limited to blocked drains, holes in fences, presence of rodents, build-up of algae in damp places and broken or leaking taps.
