    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of successful establishment of a sugarcane field. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The growing needs of plant are identified according to basic plant growth factors. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plant growth factors may refer to carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, nutrients or food and warmth.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The period when to plant sugarcane is explained according to sugarcane best planting conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Best planting conditions refer to season such as spring or summer and moisture content in the soil.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Hygiene factors before sugarcane planting commences are identified and explained to ensure maximum yield. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range: Hygiene factors may refer to field, equipment and seed sources. Field factors may refer to sources of pests and diseases by ensuring the field is free from volunteers and any vegetable material that could house any remnants of pests and diseases.
    Equipment may refer to sterilizing of cane knives.
    Seed sources from trustworthy sources and good quality.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The importance of cutting sugarcane seed before planting is explained in relation to cutting of sets, bundles and period of exposure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Soil preparation before and after the planting of the cane seeds are explained in relation to maximum yield. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Soil preparation refer to field furrowing, fertilizer addition and period of soil exposure after furrowing.

    Prepare for sugarcane planting procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Sugarcane field is inspected before planting according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection refers to identification of possible sources of pests and diseases by ensuring the field is free from volunteers and any vegetable material.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Sugarcane planting field is prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation refers to time scheduling of the crop, ploughing and disc harrowing to fine tilt and to ensure full surround of soil around seed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Equipment and materials used for sugarcane planting are prepared according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment refers to knapsack sprayers, cane knives and equipment for applying fertilizer. Materials refer to fertilizer, herbicides, and hoes disinfectants.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Healthy seed-cane is selected according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Healthy seed-cane refers to seed-cane being free from diseases, pests and obtained from trustworthy sources
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The field is furrowed and fertiliser applied before planting according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Seed-cane is cut and stored according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Storing refers to placing in bundles and planting should take place within 2 days from cutting.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Plant sugarcane manually. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Sugarcane seed is cut and placed in furrows according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cutting lengths may refer to either double, single or half stick lengths. Sugarcane being cut into sets of about 500 mm long.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Cane knives are handled according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Handling of cane knives refer to sharpening and sterilizing of the knives at the end of each row by dipping into a disinfecting liquid.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Sugarcane planting procedures are maintained according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Planting procedures may refer to sugarcane sets being covered with about 30 mm of soil and the application of pre-emergence herbicides at the prescribed rate.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Common problems associated with planting sugarcane are solved within scope of work.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
