The learner will be able to understand the reasons and principles for pruning and understand the best time for the pruning of vines.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for pruning.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The reason for pruning is explained in relation to the establishment and maintenance of vines in a desired shape. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The importance of pruning vines is explained according quality and quantity maximising growth. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pruning may refer to the prevention of the build-up of bearers and removes worn out parts and balance between vigour and production.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and application of pruning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Fertile and infertile canes on vines are identified in own context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The factors influencing the fertility of buds are explained in own words. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range: Factors may refer to bud position on cane, spacing of bearers, light intensity, temperature, water, stress, vigour, leaf surface that influence the fertility of the buds and growth condition during the previous growing season has an influence on bud fertility.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The importance of optimum budding percentage is explained according to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Optimum budding percentage may include but is not limited to sufficient reserves and cold requirements of the vines.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the time periods for pruning.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The procedure for winter pruning is explained according to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Winter pruning includes pre-pruning, clean pruning, and trial pruning.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The effects of early or late winter pruning are explained according to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The pruning of vines is explained with reference to normal vigour and production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The methodology for pruning vines is explained in relation to with poor production and set, excessive vigorous vines and vines in areas subjected to frost.

    Demonstrate an understanding of pruning systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The operation of pruning systems is explained using own words. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operations may refer to the short-bearer, half-long bearer and the long-bearer pruning systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The concepts of mechanical pruning and minimum pruning are explained using own words. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The practical application pruning hints are explained within own context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Practical application may refer to covering of pruning wounds, position of bearers and disinfection of bearers.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.

  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
