PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to replace Batter Poles/ Boards, Profiles and layer works pegs from given survey data in any civil engineering construction work environment. A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of batter boards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of profiles.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of setting out layer works.
  • Measure with a tape.
  • Complete the work sequence.

    Previously disadvantaged persons who through recognition of prior learning will be able to be accessed against this standard and receive National recognition for their competence. This will enhance their employability and career advancement and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the country. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    ABET Level 4 in Literacy and ABET Level 3 in Numeracy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Demonstrate knowledge on determining the position of a Batter board using road width, height difference and required batter slope. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    No placing of batter boards using co-ordinates is required.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Demonstrate knowledge on re-placing a batter board from given survey data using an abney level or protractor and marking up the relevant batter data.

    1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding on the use of profile poles in terms of determining levels and layer depths.

    Replacing profiles from co-ordinates is not required.

    4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cross fall and super elevation and how they are shown on profiles.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction Workers. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

    A memorandum of understanding with other ETQA bodies need to be signed when training providers working in other Sectors, requires assessment of learner achievements to take place against this unit standard.
