In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are involved in setting industrial rubber manufacturing equipment require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners can start up and run a new or modified line of rubber product. They will understand how this process differs from running normal production and how it is achieved. This will include setting up the equipment, making necessary adjustments, and identifying and resolving problems experienced.

The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Industrial Rubber Manufacturing (Mixing, Extruding, Moulding or Calendaring) (NQF level 4) and related qualifications.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for producing product in an industrial rubber manufacturing skills area.

The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Operate industrial rubber manufacturing equipment

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard.

The learner should be able to work with minimal supervision and according to worksite and manufacturer specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

Work is generally, but not exclusively, carried out in a team environment.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
    Identify and solve problems:
  • Identify product faults related to setting and undertake appropriate action.
  • Identify and correct conditions or practices which will damage or reduce the life of the machinery and equipment.
  • Identify conditions or practices that will impact on the properties of the material to be processed or the end-product performance and correct.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
    Work effectively with others:
  • Interact with workgroup members to effect efficient and problem-free change over and set ups.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage myself and my activities:
  • Prepare, plan and sequence events and procedures

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information:
  • Record and categorise problems, faults and down times related to settings and changeovers
  • Collect and record changes to settings

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
    Communicate effectively:
  • Request or instruct workgroup members and associated people to co-ordinate and effect settings or changeovers.
  • Report on the impact of settings on the performance of the process equipment and the properties of the material and end-product.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically:
  • Relate physics principles such as torque, friction, heat, flow and to the implications of these for setting and installation.
  • Analyse collected data for possible solutions to problems.

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems:
  • Solutions to problems reflect an awareness that setting forms the key to quality, output and cost-effectiveness.
  • The relationship of time taken for changeovers or setting and production cost factors.
  • Relate the role of the equipment setting team to the broader manufacturing process.
