PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to fertilise deciduous fruit trees using basic equipment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the effect of fertilizers on the harvest.
  • Prepare to fertilize the deciduous fruit trees.
  • Apply fertilizer to deciduous fruit trees.
  • Perform end of fertiliser application procedures.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the effect of fertilizers on the harvest

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Basic factors influencing plant nutrition are identified to plant nutrition needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plant nutrition factors refer to time of application, soil type, pH, and available balance of nutrients.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Elements involved in the nutrition of deciduous fruit trees are according to their importance

    Elements refer to the six major (macro) and five minor (micro) elements
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3.The importance of applying nutrient element separately or in varying mixes is explained in relation to specific times.

    Specific times relate to but not limited to the age of the tree, season and climate e.g. wet leaves.

    Equipment may refer to sowing bag with shoulder strap, vehicle for transporting fertilizer to spreading site and the scale for weighing correct amount of fertilizer.

    3. Appropriate time of fertiliser application is determined in relation to plant and environmental conditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Plant and environmental conditions refer to season, stage of growth of tree, weather conditions and the condition of the tree e.g. are the leaves dry.

    4. Fertiliser is prepared according to workplace procedure

    Preparation may refer to weighing out the correct amount of fertilizer, or to count the correct number of bags for spreading.

    Apply fertilizer to deciduous fruit trees

    1. The fertilizer is applied at the calculated rate and according to workplace procedures

    2. Application of fertiliser amounts and rate of application are controlled according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Application methods of solid and liquid fertiliser/nutrient fertilizer mix may refer to whether trees are in nursery rows, on young trees individually, during soil preparation, in planting holes or broadcasting in an established orchard.
    To spray application on trees by means of knapsack or PTO-driven sprayer, application through the irrigation system or broadcasting/band application by means of PTO-driven equipment

    3.Common problems associated with fertilizer application are solved within scope of work.

  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.

  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
