The learner will be able to understand and demonstrate the grafting of vines on a commercial scale.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of propagating vines.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of grafting as a form of propagation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of good nursery practices.

    1 The difference between propagation is explained by means of cuttings and seeds 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2 The importance of grafting in South Africa is explained from a commercial point of view. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3 Propagation of vines procedures is explained according to workplace procedures 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures should refer to rootstock cuttings, scissor cuttings and grafting.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of grafting as a form of propagation

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1 The reasons and techniques for grafting are explained according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2 Bench grafting, nursery practices and procedures for grafting are explained within scope of work. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Grafting practices shall include the requirements of one-year old root grafted vines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3 Procedures and practices for soil and aerial grafting are explained according to criteria. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of good nursery practices.

    1 Requirements to growing of good quality vines are identified in relation to soil types 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2 Importance of using virus-free materials is explained in relation to vine propagation 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3 Good management practices are identified in a nursery. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Management practices may include but not limited to weed control, fertilization, irrigation, pest and disease management.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4 A vine suitable for planting in a vineyard is choosing according to criteria. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
