PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the producing and understanding of working structural steel drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding for structural steel detailing
  • Demonstrating an understanding of beams, plate and box girders
  • Identifying, detailing and drawing columns
  • Calculating, detailing and drawing lattice, girders and bracing
  • Demonstrating an understanding of roof trusses and producing material delivery schedules
  • Demonstrating an understanding of Plate work detailing and development 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Structural steel terms will include web, flange, toe, heel, angle cleat, gusset plate, centre marks, back marks
  • Bolts will include black bolts, turned barrel bolts, high strength friction grip bolts and huck bolts
  • Column welded items will include base plate, flange cleats, web cleats, wing plates and flange plates
  • Tee pieces will include welded tee piece, bolted tee piece and a tee piece cut from an I beam
  • Roof truss elements will include span, slope, run, rise, overhang, shoe, apex, tie, rafter, purlin cleat, prat roof truss, fink roof truss, bowstring roof truss, sawtooth roof truss and mansard roof truss.
  • Conveyor chute will include feed chute, discharge chute, transfer chute and Langlaagte type chute.
