PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended to promote knowledge and understanding of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the financial services sector as a workplace and in terms of the products developed in response to the challenges posed by the AIDS pandemic.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing the changing needs of the individual in the market.
  • Interpreting the impact of HIV/AIDS on the employer and provider of employee benefits.
  • Proposing possible innovations for financial products.
  • Demonstrating insight into how global trends in respect of HIV/AIDS impact on people, financial products and the workforce.

    3. The needs of families who have lost breadwinners are analysed in terms of their financial needs.

    4. The changing needs of the market in relation to funerals is analysed with reference to cultural demands and economic reality.

    5. The changing face of the market is described in terms of segmentation and addressing the needs of changing categories of clients.

    1. The impact of HIV on a workplace is explained with reference to productivity, training costs, recruiting, multi-skilling, morale, financial results and stakeholder expectations.

    2. The knock on effect of an employee with HIV on suppliers is explained in terms of dependencies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The need for a business to understand the end user of a product is explained with reference to the impact of HIV on changing spending patterns.

    4. The concept of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) is explained with reference to the importance of people knowing their HIV status and how to access support mechanisms.

    5. The importance of understanding the HIV status of employees is explained with reference to VCT and the advantages of reducing uncertainty.

    6. The impact of HIV on the cost and structure of Employee Benefits is explained with reference to risk and retirement benefits.

    1. The impact of HIV/AIDS on business in a developed and less developed region is compared and an indication is given of how HIV status affects products, markets and the workforce. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The population pyramids of three different countries are interpreted and an indication is given of the HIV status of each country. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The projected population pyramids of the three countries three years hence are interpreted with reference to the social and economic implications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Current developments in HIV/AIDS research are investigated and the potential impact of the research is discussed with reference to people, product development, markets and the workforce. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The potential impact of the discovery of a cure or vaccine for HIV on financial services products is explained with reference to a selected sub sector.
