PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to build a range of decorative masonry elements in accordance with the design and construction method specified in working drawings ensuring that National Building and Occupational Health and Safety regulations are adhered to.

This competence complements the other masonry competencies and contributes to the development of a professional community of Masonry practitioners, who are able to use Science & Technology responsibly and cost-effectively. It should result in improved quality & service delivery in Masonry. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

  • Use drawings and identify and use tools, equipment and materials for construction masonry site practice.
  • Set out and prepare construction masonry work areas.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Arches are to be constructed with solid units and spans not exceeding 2,5 metres.
  • Flat, semi-circular and segmented arches, steps, fireplaces and chimneys, decorative screen walls.
  • Finishing of decorative elements includes jointing and pointing.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA, for "The National Certificate in Construction Masonry".
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.
  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
  • Tools, equipment and materials applicable within the context of this unit standard.
  • Methods for erecting and dismantling scaffolding.
  • Construction methods for chimneys and fireplaces.

    Arches:
  • Different types of arches (semi-circular, segmental and flat).
  • Methods for constructing arch centres.
  • Different bricklaying techniques for forming arches i.e. Brick on end, brick on edge, one and two-ring arches.

    Steps:
  • Knowledge of dimensions of treads and risers related to course heights (Risers 170-200mm and treads minimum width 250mm).
  • Different bricklaying techniques for forming steps i.e. Brick on end, brick on edge, one and two-ring arches.
  • Knowledge of jointing and pointing techniques.
  • SABS 0400: Part M - Stairways.
  • Methods for cleaning stains on brickwork.
  • Health & Safety Legislation applicable within the context of this unit standard.

  • Identify the shape of the arch and determine the appropriate geometrical setting out method for the arch centre.
  • Determine the appropriate bonding patterns to be used for steps.

    Organise and manage your activities responsibly and effectively:
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order to ensure that the construction of decorative masonry elements is carried out effectively and the cost to company for the frequent replacement of tools and equipment is minimised.
  • Plan work so that all decorative masonry elements are constructed within the specified deadlines.
  • Check the set up of decorative masonry elements on a daily basis to ensure that the settings have not been accidentally disturbed by site personnel or people who may have visited the building site in your absence.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environments and the health of others:
  • Application of appropriate precautions when constructing fireplaces and flues.
  • Check the safety and security of scaffolding at the beginning of each new work day to minimise accident or injury to yourself and other team members.
