PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to clad a roof structure in accordance with roof plan drawing specifications ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with National Building Regulations. Occupational Health and Safety legislation and within prescribed timeframes.

This competence complements the other carpentry competencies and contributes to the development of a professional community of Carpentry practitioners, who are able to use Science and Technology responsibly and cost-effectively. It should result in improved quality and service delivery in Carpentry. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is:
  • The learner is required to demonstrate competence in cladding roofs with concrete and clay tiles, slate tiles, corrugated galvanised sheeting and corrugated fibre cement sheeting.
  • Range of finishing components: ridge capping, ridge tiles, valley gutters, facia boards, barge boards.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA, for "The National Certificate in Construction Carpentry".
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.
  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

  • Drawing specifications: Area to be tiled, batten specifications, type of concrete tile to be used, tile headlaps, ridge tile overlaps, roof and gutter overhangs.
  • Accurate interpretation of drawing specifications: Area to be clad with corrugated iron sheeting, spacing of purlins, fitting of fly hip and valley purlins, fitting of valley gutters, side laps of cladding overhang at gutters, roof overhang, roofing screws to be used, fitting of ridge capping.

  • Confirm your understanding of all requirements specified for the cladding of roof structures with the engineer/client before commencing with the work at hand so as to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone.
