PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this unit standard will be doing so with the intention of reaching the full qualification "National Certificate (Construction) for the installation of floor coverings". Learners will be involved in, or working within a floor covering installation environment.

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to assess site conditions and prepare floor surfaces with confidence, including -
  • Assessing floor conditions on site against requirements of plan
  • Determining whether substrate is suitable for laying of floor covering
  • Preparing substrate for installation
  • Recording time and materials involved in preparation
  • Obtaining approval to proceed with installation

    This competence lays the foundation for the development of further floor covering competencies and underpins competencies to be acquired as part of a learning progression pathway. The generic competencies as outlined in this unit standard should facilitate portability of floor covering installation skills across different contexts within the construction industry.

    It contributes to the development of a professional community of floor covering practitioners who understand the challenges and opportunities of the South African construction context. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons who competently assess site conditions and prepare floor surfaces. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assess floor conditions on site against requirements of plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Physical on site measurements is verified against those of the plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Site is ready for floor covering installations - i.e. no wet trades, painters complete etc. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Adequate ventilation is in place if floating floors are to be fitted on top of existing sprung timber floors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. If floating floors are to be fitted, it is not fitted on top of existing parquet / wood block floors. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Determine whether substrate is suitable for laying of floor covering.

    1. Substrate is examined and tested for moisture if applicable - i.e. resilient and wood flooring.

    3. Substrate is examined for imperfections and irregularities (loose screed and unevenness).
